Free Pattern: Crocheted Heart

A crafty way to show and share love on Valentines day or to make any day special.

Materials and Tools needed:

  1. Yarn and complementary hook (i’ve used Lane Cervinia Caprice yarn & hook size 2.5mm)
  2. Pin as a stitch marker used for indicating the first sc of each row
  3. Stuffing material  i.e. polyfill

Large Heart (make two sides)

Chain 17

Row 1: 2sc in the second ch from hook, 1sc in the next six chs, skip two chains, 1 sc in the next six chs, 3sc in the last chain; working in the lower side of the chain (coming back), 1sc in the next six chs, 1sc-2chs-1sc in the two skipped chs on top row, 1sc in the next six chs, 1sc in the first ch (the first working chain), slst in the first sc of the row.

Row 2: 1ch (not counted as st), 1sc in the same st (place the marker), 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next five sts, skip two sts, 1sc in the next five sts, 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next st, 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next seven sts, 1sc-2chs-1sc in the two chs, 1sc in the next seven sts, 3sc in the next st, slst in the first sc of the row.

Row 3: 1ch (not counted as st), 1sc in the same st (place the marker), 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next six sts, skip two sts, 1sc in the next six sts, 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next st, 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next ten sts, 1sc-2chs-1sc in the two chs, 1sc in the next ten sts, 3sc in the next st, slst in the first sc of the row.

Row 4: 1ch (not counted as st), 1sc in the same st (place the marker), 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next seven sts, skip two sts, 1sc in the next seven sts, 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next st, 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next thirteen sts, 1sc-2chs-1sc in the two chs, 1sc in the next thirteen sts, 3sc in the next st, slst in the first sc of the row.

Row 5: 1ch (not counted as st), 2sc in the same st (place the marker on the first sc), 2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next eight sts, skip two sts, 1sc in the next eight sts, (2sc in the next st) three times, 1sc in the next sixteen sts, 1sc-2chs-1sc in the two chs, 1sc in the next  sixteen sts, 2sc in the next st.

Make an invisible fasten off leaving a tail on one side to sew the sides together. Sew the two sides together and stuff the heart before finishing.


Small Heart (make two sides)

Chain 15

Row 1: 2sc in the second ch from hook, 1sc in the next five chs, skip two chains, 1 sc in the next five chs, 3sc in the last chain; working in the lower side of the chain (coming back), 1sc in the next five chs, 1sc-2chs-1sc in the two skipped chs on top row, 1sc in the next five chs, 1sc in the first ch (the first working chain), slst in the first sc of the row.

Row 2: 1ch (not counted as st), 1sc in the same st (place the marker), 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next four sts, skip two sts, 1sc in the next four sts, 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next st, 3sc in the next st, 1sc in the next six sts, 1sc-2chs-1sc in the two chs, 1sc in the next six sts, 3sc in the next st, slst in the first sc of the row.

Row 3: 1ch (not counted as st), 2sc in the same st (place the marker on the first sc), 2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next five sts, skip two sts, 1sc in the next five sts, (2sc in the next st) three times, 1sc in the next nine sts, 1sc-2chs-1sc in the two chs, 1sc in the next nine sts, 2sc in the next st, make an invisible fasten off.

Make an invisible fasten off leaving a tail on one side to sew the sides together. Sew the two sides together and stuff the heart before finishing.

  1. I’m new to crochet. What does this mean: “1sc in the first ch (the first working chain), spst in the first sc of the row.” at the end of row 1. Thank you. 🙂

    • hi Chrisa, ‘1sc in the first ch’ is actually the 2nd chain from hook at the beginning of your work, it is the same ch at which the first 2sc of the row were worked into, at the end you will have sc-(1ch)-2sc in the same stitch. the ‘spst in the first sc of the row’ is actually slst into the first sc of the row which means you will skip the first ch of the row (which does not count as st) and crochet slip stitch into the fist sc you have, both i think are clearer on the graph. i’ve substituted in the pattern the spst to slst which is correct for “slip stitch”.
